How (not) to Distort Your Subject
Here are two simple images to easily show why you would not want to use a wide angle lens to shoot portraits. Both these images were taken with a 24-70 f2.8 lens. The image on the left was taken up close at 24mm, while the image on the right was taken farther back at 70mm.
